Bring business context with external custom properties

GitHub introduces external custom properties in public preview, allowing enterprises to sync business context from external systems like CMDBs. These read-only values update automatically via APIs, ensuring data integrity while remaining editable only at the source. Developers can filter repositories and apply rulesets using this synced metadata, keeping governance aligned with external records without manual duplication.

GitHub has added external custom properties, now in public preview, to let enterprises import business‑context metadata from systems such as a CMDB, an internal developer portal, or a proprietary store. The values are read‑only in the GitHub UI and are kept current through the external custom properties APIs, which pull updates from the source system automatically. This capability lets organizations keep ownership, service tier, lifecycle stage, compliance status and similar attributes synchronized without manual duplication, supporting consistent governance across repositories. By isolating the data under a dedicated namespace, the integration avoids clashes with properties managed elsewhere, and developers can still filter repositories and target rulesets based on the synced metadata. It is unclear how widely the feature will be adopted beyond the announced Port.io partnership, and GitHub has not disclosed performance metrics for large‑scale synchronizations. The long‑term roadmap for external custom properties remains unspecified, and the extent of fine‑grained permission controls is still being refined.
