Earendil announced the release of Pi Durable alongside Pi 1.0, describing it as an experimental harness designed for long‑running, durable, and adaptable agents that can operate in any JavaScript runtime. The framework does not replace the existing Pi coding agent but extends it, sharing code such as pi‑ai and adhering to the same minimalist, malleable principles, while allowing multiple humans to steer agents and survive severe failures. A harness combines storage with the machinery to run parallel conversations with large language models, providing tools and execution environments that may be local, remote, or in‑memory. Pi Durable ships with memory, SQLite, and JSONL storage backends and includes a Node execution environment; the storage interface is small enough to be implemented atop key‑value stores or Postgres, and only one process owns a storage instance at a time. The system keeps active transcripts and live tasks in memory, compacts older messages to stay within model context limits, and enables tools to access files or shells via configurable environments, allowing the harness and its tools to run on separate machines.
